  • A fresh outlook on exercise as metro Atlanta creates more walkable neighborhoods (Saporta Report)

Amid all the discussion of walkable neighborhoods and how they boost community health, almost overlooked is the cutting-edge research produced by the YMCA of Metro Atlanta that is helping people improve their physical and emotional health. Midtown Alliance Programs created by the YMCA of Metro Atlanta can help folks learn to exercise in the region’s walkable neighborhoods, including the sidewalks of Midtown. Credit: Midtown Alliance The YMCA leads all institutions for the number of wellness programs it’s created that are cited by the National Institutes of Health and the National Cancer Institute. The YMCA has five such programs. The various programs created in Atlanta have been adopted for use in 35 YMCA cities across the United States. They’ve been adopted by practitioners in Canada and the United Kingdom. “People don’t realize this is coming out of Atlanta,” said James Annesi, who since 2000 has led the association’s wellness research and evaluation program. “We don’t’ realize the YMCA can produce these kinds of things.” Annesi was the first full-time behavioral researcher to be hired by a YMCA. He’s also a professor at Kennesaw State University’s Wellstar College of Health and Human Services.  –  August 27, 2018

  • Wall Street firm's power, money may stall Eagle's Landing cityhood bid (AJC)

For six months, the battle over cityhood for Eagle’s Landing has been mostly about the dividing lines of black or white, Democrat or Republican, and rich or poor. But experts say when one of the nation’s biggest municipal bondholders entered the fray last week with a federal lawsuit to stop the Nov. 6 cityhood vote, it become about something that could fundamentally end the dispute: money. Capital One Public Funding is suing the state of Georgia and Henry County because it argues that creating Eagle’s Landing by de-annexing as much as half of Stockbridge does not address how millions of dollars in bonds owed by Stockbridge would be apportioned to the new city. In other words, Capital One wants its money and fears that a weakened Stockbridge could default. “It’s a very potent lawsuit that could actually derail the idea of de-annexations to create new cities,” said David Shock, a political science professor at Kennesaw State University. “You’re materially changing the contract behind the taxing mechanisms guaranteeing the security of the bonds.”  –  August 23, 2018
