SAS® Day attracts employers looking for KSU analytics talent

Mining Big Data pays off for students prospecting for internships and careers
For some graduates, finding a good job is tough in today’s competitive environment.
However, some lucky Kennesaw State students are in a different situation – having to decide among several job offers. They are in the “hot jobs” Big Data analytics segment.
On April 17, the eighth annual SAS® Day at KSU connected mathematics, statistics and computer science students with many potential employers. SAS is statistical software for advanced analytics, business intelligence, data management and predictive analytics. Having a good working knowledge of SAS helps to make sense of Big Data.
KSU’s Department of Statistics and Analytical Sciences, in conjunction with the SAS Institute, held a reverse career fair in the Carmichael Student Center, where prospective employers met with students they wanted to hire for full-time, coop and internship positions.
Jennifer Lewis Priestley, director of the Ph.D. in Data Sciences and professor of statistics, welcomed about 200 guests and students to the event. After opening remarks by Kennesaw State President Daniel S. Papp, the crowd heard from two keynote speakers.
Former Georgia Revenue Commissioner Doug MacGinnitie discussed how he and his leadership team used data to implement changes in three key areas: improving customer service, focusing compliance efforts on under- or non-reporting taxpayers and fighting fraud.
CEO and co-founder of Talent Analytics Greta Roberts reported on the results of a groundbreaking study to better understand analytics professionals: how to find them, why they leave jobs and how firms can hold onto them in this highly competitive job market.
About 50 undergraduate and graduate statistics students showcased their SAS work through creative presentations, which were judged by businesses and members of the community who use SAS and are looking to recruit interns, co-ops and, best of all, full-time employees.
Check presentations by Southern Company to several poster competition winners highlighted the event.
Graduate student Audrey Brasuell, who took home a $1,000 award, won for creating “a music recommendation system that helped people find new artists and songs.”
