KENNESAW, Ga. (May 29, 2014) — Kennesaw State’s Summer Farmers Market opens today and will operate every Thursday 4-7 p.m. until August 7. Locally sourced food, such as sustainable and fresh produce, baked goods, artisan breads, gourmet popcorn and honey, will be available to the public in KSU’s East Parking Lot just north of the Waffle House on Frey Road.
The market is operated through a campus partnership between KSU’s Culinary and Hospitality Services and the Students for Environmental Sustainability. The Students for Environmental Sustainability are committed to teaching the campus and local communities about urban gardening and responsible farming methods. As part of KSU’s Farm-to-Campus initiatives, the student-run market is dedicated to providing products that support the local economy.
KSU’s Culinary and Hospitality Services has been nationally recognized for sustainable dining practices and its Farm-to-Campus initiatives. KSU received the National Restaurant Association’s Operator Innovations Award for Sustainability and won the Innovator of the Year award. The award-winning dining hall, The Commons, was a finalist for the 2014 National Restaurants Association Operator Innovator Awards for Health and Nutrition.
Culinary and Hospitality Services also received the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce Trident Award for Sustainability and was recognized by Princeton Review’s Guide to Green Colleges. The Commons was ranked fourth for Best College Dining Hall by BestColleges.com, ranked in the Top 10 by the Daily Meal for the 60 Best Colleges for Food in America and ranked 14th in the nation by The Daily Beast/Newsweek. It also was honored with the Innovator Award from the Georgia Restaurant Association.
