(Aug 14, 2013) —
KENNESAW, Ga. (August 14, 2013) — The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia today approved a new Bachelor
of Arts in Applied Computer Science degree program at Kennesaw State University. The
new program will launch in fall 2014.
The program, housed in the College of Science and Mathematics’ Department of Computer
Science, will utilize an innovative approach to instructional delivery combining hybrid
and online classes with a traditional classroom setting.
“The addition of this degree to the University’s growing portfolio of programs demonstrates
Kennesaw State’s commitment to preparing and educating students for the changing marketplace,”
said W. Ken Harmon, Kennesaw State’s provost and vice president for academic affairs.
“In addition, the combination of hybrid online classes with in-class learning provides
the flexibility that today’s students demand.”
The proposed curriculum offers students the opportunity to study specific applications
such as cloud computing, robotics, mobile devices and computer security. In addition,
students will have the ability to minor in applied statistics, information security
and assurance, and applied mathematics. A required computer science senior project
enables students to develop and practice essential project management skills and work
with current software tools and technologies.
“This degree truly provides students with the best of both worlds — a solid foundation
and wide breadth of computer science knowledge with hands-on experience and the ability
to focus on two to three key areas of expertise,” said Ken Hoganson, interim chair
of Kennesaw State’s Department of Computer Science and Professor of Computer Science
& Information Systems.
Kennesaw State’s College of Science and Mathematics boasts nearly 3,000 majors in
14 degree programs. During the past three fiscal years, the college received more
than $14.8 million in grants for research and scholarships.
