The Premiere Series at Kennesaw State University will present vocalist Monica Mancini in concert at 8 p.m. on Feb. 4 in Howard Logan Stillwell Theater. Aptly titled‚ “Mancini at the Movies‚” the program includes music written by her father‚ Henry Mancini‚ Johnny Mercer‚ Barry Manilow and others. The concert also features film clips.
The daughter of famed film composer Henry Mancini and notable studio singer Ginny O’Conner Mancini‚ Monica Mancini has carved out an impressive career of her own as a concert performer appearing with major symphonies worldwide. She has appeared on countless film scores and recordings with everyone from Placido Domingo to Michael Jackson. Her debut‚ simply titled “Monica Mancini‚” found her paying tribute to her father’s musical legacy. Her debut was also the companion to her highly acclaimed PBS Special‚ Monica Mancini: On Record.
Mancini followed her chart−topping debut with a CD of music by another great American songwriter—Johnny Mercer‚ who was a fixture of Mancini’s childhood as one of her father’s collaborators and dearest friends. Mancini’s fresh‚ eclectic approach and insightful interpretations reconfirm the timelessness of Mercer’s songs. The CD featured six sets of song lyrics that Mercer’s wife discovered after his death and asked Barry Manilow to complete. Manilow‚ who hand−delivered them to Mancini‚ declared that‚ “this music has been waiting for a singer like Monica.”
For her performance at Kennesaw State‚ Mancini will be accompanied by renowned musicians Greg Field‚ drums; Steve Aho‚ percussion; Paul Morin‚ bass; John Chiodini‚ guitar; and Shelly Berg‚ piano.
Pratt’s performance at Kennesaw State University is the fourth event in the KSU College of the Arts’ 2005−2006 Premiere Series. For ticket information‚ call the KSU Box Office at 770−423−6650 or visit www.kennesaw.edu/arts.
