Grab your family and your favorite blanket‚ and enjoy a free showing of “The Day After Tomorrow‚” Aug. 21‚ when KSU hosts STAR94’s “Movies Under the Stars.”

Georgia (Aug 4, 2004) — Grab your family and your favorite blanket‚ and enjoy a free showing of “The Day After Tomorrow‚” Aug. 21‚ when KSU hosts STAR94’s “Movies Under the Stars.”

The movie‚ which is rated PG−13‚ will be shown on a giant‚ five−story tall inflatable movie screen on the Campus Green‚ beginning at sundown. “Movies Under the Stars‚” is a creation of Atlanta−based Special Events Network‚ which launched the series with Atlanta radio station STAR94 in 2003.

While the concept of outdoor movies has been around for a long time‚ Special Events Network founder Bruce Piefke said he wanted to bring back the nostalgia of the old drive−in theaters.

“People never get tired of being outdoors‚ spending time with family and friends‚ and watching a great movie‚” Piefke said. “It’s a great way to bring a community together because movies have such a broad appeal.”

With Kennesaw State University’s emphasis on community outreach‚ hosting a “Movies Under the Stars” promotion was a natural fit‚ according to University Relations Director Frances Weyand.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for those of us in the KSU family to fellowship with residents of the surrounding community‚ and to give something back for all of the support they have provided during our 40−year history‚ "Weyand said. "We have a beautiful campus that has undergone many changes in recent years‚ and this event allows us to showcase the campus in a way that's never been done before."

Since its inception‚ 60 movies have been shown in communities across the South as part of “Movies Under the Stars.” Average audience size is 3‚500 moviegoers‚ but a recent show in Albany‚ Ga. drew a crowd of more than 10‚000.

“In today’s world‚ people are yearning for some sense of community‚ and ‘Movies Under the Stars’ facilitates this in a relaxing and free way‚” Piefke said. “We have been wanting to test the appeal of ‘Movies Under the Stars’ on a college campus‚ and we have been looking for a campus that is easy to reach and is part of the surrounding community. KSU also has a beautiful spot to host the event.”
