Alex McGee brings extensive experience in public policy

Kennesaw State University has appointed public policy executive Alex McGee as vice president for external affairs and chief of staff, effective October 9. 

As a member of the president’s cabinet, McGee will be responsible for Kennesaw State’s overall external relations programs. McGee will work to optimize Kennesaw State’s academic, research and public service assets and foster the development of partnerships with the University’s diverse constituencies and stakeholders.

“Alex McGee brings a wealth of knowledge, organizational skills and experience to this position,” Kennesaw State President Sam Olens said. “Alex has impeccable credentials and is a proven leader who will play a major role in shaping Kennesaw State’s future. We are delighted to welcome him to the KSU family.”

McGee comes to Kennesaw State with more than 20 years’ experience in both the public and private sectors. Most recently he served as a principal in the Public Policy and Regulatory Affairs practice at Dentons US/McKenna, Long and Aldridge, one of the world’s largest law firms.

“I look forward to being part of an already dynamic University community and advancing the mission and vision of Kennesaw State,” McGee said. “Kennesaw State has a strong reputation with great faculty, staff, students and alumni. Prior to joining Dentons, McGee was the director of government affairs for Georgia-Pacific/Koch Companies Public Sector, and the Department of Energy’s principal deputy assistant secretary for Congressional and Intergovernmental Affairs. McGee began his career in government as a senior staff member and state director for the late U.S. Senator Paul Coverdell (R-GA).

McGee earned a political science degree from Hampden-Sydney College. His community involvement includes serving on the boards of the Buckhead Council of Neighborhoods and the Brookwood Hills Neighborhood Association, and as a member of the Buckhead Lions Club. McGee also has supported and volunteered with the Epilepsy Foundation of Georgia, Prevent Cancer Foundation and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.
